Extending your Thai Visa

There are a number of options when it comes to extending your Thai visa and this would depend on the type of visa you have in your passport. We will list the most common Thailand visa options and extension options. Thai Marriage Visa:

This visa is valid for 90 days once you enter Thailand and can be extended to 1 year at Thai Immigration if you meet the requirements for the visa extension. We have listed the requirements here.

Thai Retirement Visa:

This is a visa for those over the age of 50 and who meet the financial requirements as listed on this website. This extension is done at Thai immigration in Bangkok if the requirements are met and these requirements have been listed here.

Thai Tourist Visa:

This is a 60 day visa and can be extend at Thai immigration in Bangkok or Thai Immigration in Pattaya or Phuket if you pay the 1,900 THB fee for an additional 30 days or another extension of another 7 days. This has been listed here.

Thai Multiple Entry Visa:

These can be extended. If it is a marriage visa it is explained here. If it is a business visa it is explained here. The Business visa can only be extended with a work permit. The tourist visa can be extend for an additional 30 days after the first 60 days have lapsed. This is explained here.

  1. Hello. We are the citizens of Belarus on a tourist visas which expired on March 28. Before expiration we extended them in the immigration for more 30 days, that is until April 28. Our flight on April 24 was cancelled. Can we extend our visas for more 30 days that is until May 28? If yes, could you please tell us what to do for that? We have no Belarus embassy in Thailand.

    1. If you have letter from your embassy in Bangkok, you can apply for an extension at the immigration office on or before April 28. If you cannot get the embassy letter, you can stay until April 30 due to the visa amnesty.

  2. Hi, I’ve had already extend my visa for a month and it will be expired until April 23, 2020. But due to the coronavirus my country which is the PHILIPPINES extended its lockdown until the end of April. So how are we gonna do can we still get an extension together with my bf? He’s from TEXAS.

    1. You are covered by the visa amnesty. It means your visa is automatically extended and you are permitted to stay until April 30. If the situation on the COVID-19 crisis will not improve the government may extend it.

For the extension, you just have to submit one passport size photo (4cm x 6cm) with white background, TM6 departure card, TM30 receipt from your hotel or accommodation and pay the fee of 1,900 Thai baht.

    1. You care able to extend your tourist visa as long as you are on the last 30 days of your current entry stamp. The fee is 1900 baht. As UK national, you get 30 days permit to stay when entering a land border.

  11. I have a standard 30 day entry tourist visa for Thailand which runs out on 13th December. I left Thailand on 27th November but will re-enter on 12th December through the Cambodia/Thailand border. I fly from Bangkok on 14th December to England.

    Can I re enter on my current visa? And can I apply for an extension at the border crossing or at an office in Bangkok? How much would this be?

    1. Depending on your nationality, you will be given a new permit to stay stamp. It can be 15 days or it can be 30 days. It is free of charge.

I would like to ask, is it possible to make my tourist visa extension? if possible then for how long will I be permitted to stay?

    1. Yes, you may ask for the extension at the local immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht.

    I have entered Phuket (HKT) yesterday from Singapore ( 6.20 PM Tiger Airways). I have planned to stay at Phuket from 05.12.2016 to 20.12.2016 and moving to Pattaya from Phuket (UTAPAO PG282) on 20.12.2016, 15:10 PM. I have got an on arrival VISA at Phuket Airport from 5.12.2016 to 19.12.2016. I have already booked my flight from Phuket to Pattaya on 19.10.2016 itself and also the rooms are booked at Pattaya from 20.12.2016 to 27.12.2016. I need to extend my VISA from 19.12.2016 to 27.12.2016. Is it possible? Kindly help me with this.

    1. You need to contact the Thai immigration office in Phuket for the possible extension of your permit to stay.

    I have a 30 days tourist visa. I want to extend or change it for a 60 or 90 days Non-Immigration visa (for volunteering) or type O. Im in Pai right now and my visa expires on December 22. Can I extend or change my visa without leaving Thailand? Can I just go in the Immigration office in Chiang Mai or even in Mae Hong Son?

    1. You have to change your visa into a non immigrant O visa at the Thai embassy in Vientiane. You cannot do it inside Thailand.

  15. I have extended my tourist visa here in Nakonsawan for 30 days last November 28 which will expire on December 28, 2016. I may ask if I can do it after the expiration again while waiting for my documents. Thanks.

    1. You need to leave the country after the extension. You can re-enter Thailand and you will be given 30 days at the airport.

    1. Yes, you can do it in Chiang Mai Promenade Mall. The fee is 1900 baht.

  17. Hi my 30-day extension expires on 12 of January 2017 and I need 30 days extra rather than fly out and back again. I will be close to the Laos border. Can I cross and go to the Thai embassy in Savanakhet and extend for 30 days and still come back by land or will that only entitle me to 15 days?

    1. If you are UK, Canada or US citizen, a quick border trip will be enough. You will be given 30 days at the border.

  18. Can we get a visa extension of 7 days on the airport itself where we get the visa stamp of 15 days on our passport? Since we need to show them our return ticket it will be easy to book the return ticket once for all and not change the date or modify the date of departure.

    1. The visa on arrival cannot be extended and airport immigration does not issue visa extension.

    1. You may visit the Immigration Office in Phuket to apply for an extension of your ED visa. Please get in touch with their office to inquire about the requirements you will need for the application.

    1. You may visit one of the immigration offices in Thailand to apply for an extension of your entry stamp which you receive upon arrival.

  21. I have a multiple entry 6 months tourist visa which expires on the 13th of December. I would like to extend for 60 days at immigration. My question is my current 60 day stamp expires on the 20th of November. Do I need to do a border run and leave Thailand or can apply now at immigration in Samui for the 60 day extension without leaving the country?

    1. You can only extend your current 60-day stamp for 30 days at the immigration office.

      If you want to get your last 60-day stamp, you will need to exit and re-enter. Then, once you return, you can apply for a 30-day extension at the immigration office.

  22. Hi there. We will be looking to extend our 30-day visa exempt entry stamp at an immigration office in Bangkok as we do not have time to apply for a tourist visa in Denmark. Will it be possible to apply for an extension on the day of arrival? This would save us from going back to Bangkok or to Phuket half way through our holiday.

    1. Yes, you may already apply for an extension upon entry. You may visit the Chaengwattana Immigration office in Bangkok to apply.

    1. You may be able to apply for a visa extension at the immigration office in Koh Samui. Kindly get in touch with their office to confirm this. Otherwise, you may visit other immigration offices who provide this service.
