Every year, the Kingdom of Thailand has been continuously attracting millions of international tourists from all across the globe, making the Thai tourist visa a high demand in many countries. Thai tourist visa is issued to those who wish to enter Thailand for tourism purposes. This type of visa can be valid for either 3 or 6 months and visa holders are permitted to stay in the country, upon arrival, a period of not exceeding 60 days.

Furthermore, those who wish to extend their stay may file for an application for a 30-day extension at any immigration offices in Thailand. Visa extension fee is priced at THB1,900.

Tourist Visa Requirements

  • Passport or travel document with validity period of at least 6 months following the intended date of departure
  • Visa application form
  • Recent photograph (4 x 6cm)
  • Round trip flight tickets
  • Sufficient travel finances (at least 20,000 baht per person and 40,000 baht per family)

    1. You will need to go to the nearest Immigration Office to apply for an extension if you wish to stay for 7 more days inside Thailand.

  2. I came to Thailand for fun but then got involved with a project and asked a company to make some samples for me to take back to the US. I am waiting for them to be ready and it may take a few days longer than when my 30 days are up on my tourist visa. Can I depart 2-3 days later and pay a exit penalty or should I apply for a visa extension?

If you are staying in Thailand for 2 – 3 more days beyond your permitted stay inside the country, you will be required to pay for the overstay fine at the airport before they’ll allow you to leave. Rather than overstaying in Thailand, it’s recommended to apply for an extension at the Immigration Office, instead.

    1. You may apply for an extension at the nearest Immigration Office in Thailand. The extension fee at the moment is THB 1,900.

  4. Hello, I have a 60 day tourist visa due to expire at the end of May. I need to extend it to stay till mid June. Can I extend it now or does it need to be closer to my 60 day expiry? And if so, Can I do this in Mae Hong Son?

    1. You will need to extend your visa at the nearest Immigration Office where you are staying in Thailand. As regards the date when you can apply for the extension, you may start the application as early as 15 days before its expiration.

    1. Yes, applying for an extension at the Immigration Office normally does not require proof of exit from Thailand.

    1. You will be required to pay for a day worth of overstay fine before they’ll let you leave Thailand. As an option, you may apply for an extension at the nearest Immigration Office to avoid being penalized for overstaying your visa.

    I am on a British passport and I am here in Thailand for the first time on a free 30 day visa. I would like to extend my visa for another 30-60 day plus. Can I do this in the country and if so, how?

    1. You may apply for the extension at the Immigration Office in the city or province where you are staying in Thailand. Just bring with you your passport, passport-size photo, and the extension fee of THB 1,900.

      The maximum period of extension that can be applied for on a 30-day visa exempt stamp is 30 days.

  11. I am in Koh Phangan at present and will be staying one month more. After that I am planning to fly to Chan Mai, but I will only have 10 days left of my Visa.   12. Hello I am in Thailand and I have a 2 month visa I would like to extend for an extra month but can I extend the day it runs out? Or how do I have to do it before. Also could I extend for a further 7 days after?

    1. You may only extend your visa when it’s still within its validity period. Depending on the type of your current visa, you may be able to apply for an extension of 7 days or up to 30 days.

    I’m coming to travel for 5 weeks flying to Bangkok and departing from Bangkok however this is longer than my 30day tourist visa, I plan to go to Cambodia for 1 or 2 weeks during my stay if possible, will I have to extend my visa for flying home when re entering Bangkok or when I cross the border will it renew? Also if I decide I want to stay in Thailand rather than go to Cambodia last minute is there a possibility to extend my visa whilst I am in Thailand?

    1. You may only apply for an extension when you are inside Thailand by going to the nearest Immigration Office.

Or as an option, you may travel to Thailand without a visa and just apply for an extension later on once you are already inside the country. Since you are a New Zealand passport holder, you are entitled to a 30-day visa free stay in Thailand.

    1. You may visit the nearest Immigration Office to apply for an extension. Another option is to go to a neighboring country and then come back to obtain a 15-day visa-free entry.

And when I an granted a visa (whether this be online, in person, or post) what is the validity period? How long can I leave it until I get one?     1. If you wish to apply for a visa however, you will do either lodge your application by post or in person (there’s no online application at the moment). Since you and your boyfriend are both holding British passports, you are entitled to a 30-day visa-free entry to Thailand when you enter the country via air or land travel.     1. You may go to the nearest Immigration Office to apply for an extension to your stay. Another option is to do another border run in a neighboring country of Thailand.

    1. No, you may only use your visa within its validity period. You will need to apply and obtain a new visa if you wish to travel on a later date.

    1. If this is the first time for you to use your tourist visa, then you will be given at least 60 days entry stamp upon arrival at the airport when you travel to Thailand.

    I’m an Italian tourist that would visit Thailand. I’ll buy a fly ticket from Singapore, but I would cross the border to Laos by land. Can I entry in Thailand with only one trip ticket?

    If I need stay more than 30 days can I extend my visa in Chiang mai?

    1. A return ticket is normally required from a person who wish to enter Thailand for tourism purpose. If, however, you are able to prove to the Immigration Officer that you are a bona fide tourist using other documents, then you might be permitted to enter Thailand and also be able to extend your visa in any Immigration Office in the country.
